Well the answer is very simple, you are downloading some files on your computer and they are taking much time such as hours to download and you can’t wait, you want to go for outing but downloading files is also important, or you want to go our at a specific time but you do not have anything to do you start watching movies on your computer and can set the shutdown of Windows so that you can reach to your destination at given time. The reasons may be differ with problems but in those conditions you can use this method to shutdown your computer at a particular time.

There are many methods to do so, but here I am going to tell you about two simple and easy methods to shutdown your computer at a specific timing. One is using Notepad trick while the other is Windows Task Scheduler. You must look at both of them.

Open a notepad. To open the notepad go to the start then all programs then accessories and then select notepad. If you cannot understand where is notepad, look at this YouTube video

After the notepad is open copy the below code and paste that into the notepad.

shutdown -s -t 60

Here 60 represents the time in second I have selected the 60 seconds which mean the 1 minute, if you want to increase the shutdown time then you can replace the 60 with following times.

  • For 1 minute put 60
  • For 5 minutes put 300
  • For 30 minutes put 1800
  • For 1 hour put 7200

Save to file on your desktop with name Shutdown.bat you can change the name of file according to your desire but the extension (.bat) is necessary.

After naming your file click on Save as Type and select All Files as in below image, that press the Save button. You file has been saved on your desired location.

To shutdown the computer just click onto that file. Your computer will be shutdown at the specified time which you set in step No. 3.

Shutdown Computer At A Given Time Using Windows Task Scheduler

Task Scheduler is a Windows program to schedule your tasks so that they can be performed automatically once set. Task scheduler was first introduced in Windows 95. We are going to use this function of Windows to schedule the shutdown time for our computer.
Click on Start button and type taskschd.msc in the search bar and press enter key to open the Task Scheduler. You can also use Windows + R keys to open Task Scheduler.

Once the Task Scheduler is opened click on Create Basic Tasks option at the right menu panel.

Now Task Scheduler will ask you to give a name and write a brief description of your task if you want after that click on Next button.
You will be asked When do you want the task to start? you can select any option according to your requirement but if you ask me then I will say choose One Time and click on Next button.

Enter the starting and ending time of your task in appropriate boxes and click on Next button.
Action Page will be displayed and will ask you to choose an action, there select Start a program and continue.

On the Program/script  field type shutdown and –s –f –t 0 in Add Arguments field, here 0 (zero) mean 0 second, you can also replace it with any number like 600 seconds so your computer will be shutdown after 600 seconds which is equal to 10 minutes.

Once again click on the Next button and the Finish button that’s it you have successfully set the task on Task Scheduler.
